An unfortunate incident of arson prompted the design and construction of a new, state-of-the-art middle school in the Clark County School District. The 156,000-square-foot school was planned around a central courtyard. Community connectivity, efficient circulation, and simplicity of organization were the core principles driving the campus plan. With community driving the design concept, the auditorium, gymnasium, commons, and playfields serve as amenity spaces during off-school hours. The heart of the campus – a fully secure courtyard – serves as an organizational element as well as a central gathering place for students and teachers. A large amphitheater allows for classes to be taught outside as well as for casual socialization among students and educators. The design of Roy Martin was so successful that the Clark County Library District decided to make it a prototypical design kit for future middle schools as the need arises in the growing Las Vegas Valley.
