Billy and Rosemary Vassiliadis Elementary School
Las Vegas, NV
Vassiliadis ES is a prototypical elementary school design developed by the Simpson Coulter | STUDIO team, which retains its kit-of-parts characteristics but is reconfigured to fit into the specific conditions of the Vassiliadis site. Completed in 2017, the school opened its doors to approximately 850 elementary students with a design that prioritizes flexible learning spaces, connections to the outdoor play areas, and daylit learning environments. Located in the hills next to Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, the school is integrated into the trail and park system of the Summerlin Paseos neighborhood. Pedestrian walkways connect the front entry to the adjacent park and the playground to the neighborhood trail system, promoting a safe walking environment. Terraced landscape planters wrap around the edges of the site to maximize the available space for school use while breaking up the steep slopes of the hill.
